Abstract

|
Ulcerative colitis, a diffuse inflammatory disease of the mucosal lining of the colon and rectum, is characterized by bloody diarrhea that waxes and wanes without apparent cause. Ulcerative colitis was rarely seen in Korea. The etiology of ulcerative colitis was suggested bacterial origin, viral origin and autoimmune reaction, but remains unknown. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea and weight loss. Anatomical distribution of the lesion is mostly distal colon and diagnosis is made of physical examination, symptoms and rectosigmoidoscopy, but histopathologic findings are the most important. Total removal of the affected organs-the colon and rectum- provides a complete cure, but at a price, since patients so treated must learn to live with an external abdominal stoma. for the remainder of their lives. Recently, we experienced two cases of ulcerative colitis, and treated with surgical operation and had a good result.
